I would try this on my old and useless desktop: AMD Athlon XP 2000+, 256MB RAM, some old low-budget 128MB ATI Radeon video card. It will never work out, but there's nothing on that computer (I formatted the drives) so I'd like to see what happens. It doesn't have a DVD player, though so I can't install it.
Just mount the image using Daemon tools (or another program) and run setup from within XP/Vista. That's how I did mine.

I formatted the drives, so there's no way to do that

It must have upgraded, since it can't delete the OS from the OS itself.

I'm running it on a 2.0 GHz Athlon XP / MSI 6750 Mobo / 1Gig DDR 400 RAM/ NVidia 5700 AGP. Its running smoothly, haven't got much of a chance to mess with drivers and such though. Might try and run minimal Aero functions. Wondering if the Chipset drivers for the old Nvidia Chipsets will run....

    Sorry, I should have specified.

I first made a 20GB partition, then installed it to that. Now I dual boot Vista and 7.
