Once Windows 7 is complete, how do I get it?
The answer depends on who you are:

    • MSDN & TechNet Subscribers: Subscribers will be able to download the final version of Windows 7 a few weeks after we announce RTM.
    • Volume License (VL) Customers: Customers with Software Assurance for Windows will be able to download the final version of Windows 7 Enterprise a few weeks after we announce RTM. As announced today by Bill Veghte during his WPC09 keynote, customers without Software Assurance will be able to purchase Windows 7 through Volume Licensing on September 1st.
    • Consumers, Enthusiasts, & Beta Testers (Everyone else): The retail version of Windows 7 will be available in stores October 22nd. If you pre-ordered Windows 7, it should be delivered sometime around the October 22nd timeframe (depends on the retailer). You can pre-order Windows 7 today through many online retailers like the Microsoft Store.
    • On New PCs: OEMs are expected to start shipping new PCs with Windows 7 pre-installed on them around October 22nd.

He forgot to add torrent to the list.

I'm still struggling to see what all of the excitement is about the RTM. My assumption is that once somebody gets the RTM and they figure out a way to hack it so that it can be activated...then they have the final version that everybody else would be paying for. Does that about sum up the reason for all the clammering and frantic posting and searching?

If that is the case, I guess the excitement is just lost on me as I have a legal copy of Vista with a free Win7 upgrade for my windows computer and I use Linux on my other computers (and that's always free..so piracy not required).

I am excited about RTM because it means I can then run the final copy that I will pay for on my machines. It has nothing to do with hack/slash/crack. It's the beginning of the end of RC for me. Officially.

But why the excitement and the need to get it right now, why not just wait until it's easily obtainable after official release? Are people having issues with the freely available and safely downloadable RC1 release that Microsoft is providing? I've been using that since it came out and it's been completely stable and functional for me.

I am referring to an official release. I will get it when it becomes available on MSDN/TechNet. I was just pointing out a link where people can get info about the RTM, and some of the questions answered... and not rumors or torrents.

Alright, I gotcha. Sorry, I just lumped you in with the majority of those here who are not MSDN/TechNet members and aren't looking for their releases in official channels.

I second that! Not only are they having anxiety attacks regarding getting the latest leak, they are arguing with and insulting each other over which version will be the REAL RTM!
