    Upgrading Vs Clean Install

I'm not sure whether to clean install x64 Windows 7 or just "upgrade" my current Vista Ultimate x64 to Windows 7.

(I was running the 32bit until the 64bit appeared and i deleted it's partition)

I can always reinstall Vista again in August, but once I've installed the beta I'm not gonna be using Vista (i primarily use Ubuntu) so it seems a waste of disk space to just leave it intact.

Upgrading would save me the hassle of having to reinstall CS4, Browsers, OpenOffice, iTunes etc - which gets tedious.

However, would an upgrade over install result in reduced performance? Or does it just shuffle everything into a .old folder and that's that?

Like i said, my main OS is Ubuntu, so it's not like my Vista is "essential" and if windows 7 x64 is dire (which given the 32bit i was running until a few days ago was solid as... something solid.) i doubt i'd be changing anyway.

    Hi,

    I'm on 7000 x64 - it seems as solid as the x86.

I just did the Upgrade of Build 6956 to Beta 7000 (32 bit). I worked flawlessly. All my settings & programs transferred. It activated with the 32 bit KEY I downloaded this morning. No problems at all. This is an older AMD 2400mhz box with 1gb ram. It seems very smooth & refreshing.

    That's awesome to know!

I meant upgrading Windows Vista to Windows 7, not a previous release though.

    Hi ,

Are you meaning an Upgrade install where you start the install from within Vista and it overwrites the o/s files but hopefully leaves your programs and settings ?

The Windows. old folder is what you get when you boot from the dvd, and don't format the partition - just click the partition you want to install on and you get the option for everything that was on that partition to be shoved into a Windows. old folder.

If you do that , you will need to reset everything and reinstall your apps.

Personally, I would go for a clean install every time. You need to save all your data and app. setup files first. Boot from the dvd - select Drive options ( advanced ) - format the partition an then install onto it. Much cleaner.

Again you need to reinstall apps. and reset everything how you like it.

If you do not have a partition marked active when you clean install 7, it seems it will create a small 200 mb partition in front of itself , i.e. that will be the first partition - it will be the System, Active partition.

    Hope it helps

put our win7 32 bit in a new partition on vista machine

using a low end emachines with vista home basic and 1.5gb memory we made a new partition to play with win7 32 bit. decided not to upgrade the vista program even though this computer is a backup machine really. easy install and working well. just installed a few program exe's we had copied to cd to try on win7.

seems faster than vista but that's perception, not stopwatch.

I have to say, I just this morning took the upgrade route...
Went from Vista 64 Home Premium to the 7 beta (7000 build)...

No problems yet...everything seem to come over nicely and all appears to be working...

    Oh....and I LIKE IT!
