Ext HD shared between Win7 and WinXP machines - corrupted?

Hello! I have a whole lot of stuff stored on a series of external hard drives -- archives of stuff: family photos, music, video files, backups of documents, all pretty inert stuff. It's all been saved from WinXP machines.

We've just taken in a new-to-us Win7 machine in the past week, and once I got it properly reformatted and set up, I copied some files from one of my external hard drives onto the Win7 machine. Now my WinXP machine is telling me that the external hard drive is corrupt and unreadable -- though it's still perfectly readable on the Windows 7 machine.

    This is rather inconvenient.

Is this a known issue between Win7 and WinXP? One hit by Seven is XP's Armageddon?

What I can do, maybe from the Win7 machine, that will make the hard drive usable again for the XP machines?

I have more files from other hard drives that I'd also like to transfer to the Win7 machine, but I'm afraid that every device I bring to the Win7 machine might become unusable to the WinXP machines ...

I appreciate any help that you can offer. Thank you!

There is nothing that Windows 7 would inherently do to an external hard drive to cause it to be unreadable by Windows XP. There is something else going on here. Are you running antivirus or any other protection on both PC's?

An easy thing to do in the meantime is to right click on the drive in either OS, select Properties, Tools, Disk Check to check for hardware errors on the disk.

That worked perfectly - thank you!
