John, drivers are stored on a HDD, so you can't copy them to the PC. Maybe you should recheck for the correct drivers and save them directly to the USB.

Wasting time is my main activity nowadays.

NO go

Thanks you fellows have redone the drivers for the damn thing but it clearly isn't for someone as low tech as me to figure out. Perhaps the satellite bloke will be able to get the damn thing going.

Once again thanks so much for your time and most of all your patience I sincerely appreciate how much you have done today.

I reckon if only the dept stuff could have been got rid of without losing the net connect-ability things would have been ok.

Ah well such is life.

All that's missing is a network card driver and you're going to quit? That makes no sense.

Does the physical network card have any details on it? E.g. serial number, if so perform a quick Google search of that to find your device.

Then when you have the device name search for the most up-to-date XP drivers.

Ok

Well Mac and IamDan I did that earlier on this afternoon and got the answer that it was no longer supported and that the driver was automatically downloaded with XP.

But I'll try again. Thing is getting it onto the new install as the other drivers I tried all failed to make nay difference.

Still here goes.

Well tried it again and it just will not go it does not even pick up the adapter card in device manager.
I have tried a spare (new) TP-Link adapter card installing the drivers from the small CD before inserting the card and it "sees' the card (with a small yellow ! underneath it) whereas it didn't the D-Link but still will not connect to the net. So I don't know what the dickens is wrong with it. So it looks like the machine is rigged only to run with the original hard drive.

EDIT: Ops, Is the D-Link card wired or wireless? For some reason I think I just assumed it was a wireless card but reading the posts again I think maybe I got it wrong. I've really got to have some coffee before posting. I'm going to fire up my XP PC and have a look around and see if i can come up with something to try.

One option is to open a command prompt window and run ipconfig/all. Then look to see if you are getting an IP address etc. You can also run ipconfig/release and then ipconfig/renew.

I've run this little app on my XP boxes, WhoAmI - find IP address, Internet connection test, DNS test, ip finder, locate ip ,it will do the above and then some. Its stand alone, no install required, just run it. It's quit handy for seeing whats going on with your network connection.

Hiyya alpha

Nope mate won't even run ipconfig - I get just a flash of a small black screen and it's gone.

Plus if I can't get on to the net I can't run those sites you suggested - unless I shove the other hard drive back in of course. Thats the annoying thing about it all it works with that wretched drive but the new one - starts up XP and then zip.

If thee was a way of clearing that government dept of education stuff out - no problem.
