It probably is better because it is newer. However, since you probably will want to have the real version I'd wait if the RC is OK for now.
I myself have the RC and either upgraded my other software or could find ways to make them work. So I will be ready in October. Since I don't have issues I don't feel like installing everything again when I know in October when I buy W7 I will have to install it again.
I had Vista Ultimate 64 and W7RC definitely is better and was worth the hassle to deal with some software that originally didn't work (mostly I found free alternatives). All the commercial software (AutoCAD, TRACE, Adobe worked with the updates available.
I assume all software issues are resolved by both MS and the other software companies. I think everyone feels it will be successful and see the need to adapt.
Never touch a running system, unless system testing is your purpose. If you actually work with the PC, don't touch it if it isn't broke

Go for the latest RTM version and just upgrade install. It's easy and works GREAT and can be run unactivated for 120 days with rearming (tutorials and instructions available on this site) and the final official RTM will be out before the 120 days is up.

if everyone took this over-generalised advice, we would all still be using DOS. (or whatever came before DOS - assembly language?)
surely this forum is for more techy types who like playing around with unfinished operating systems, whose philosophy is probably closer to "keep touching it until it breaks, then learn how to fix it."
...but each to his own, eh?

Yes, you can.
It requires modifying a file but it's easy. Exactly how is explained in the following link: Engineering Windows 7 : Delivering a quality upgrade experience
- Download the ISO as you did previously and burn the ISO to a DVD.
- Copy the whole image to a storage location you wish to run the upgrade from (a bootable flash drive or a directory on any partition on the machine running the pre-release build).
- Browse to the sources directory.
- Open the file cversion.ini in a text editor like Notepad.
- Modify the MinClient build number to a value lower than the down-level build. For example, change 7233.0 to 7000.0.
- Save the file in place with the same name.
- Run setup like you would normally from this modified copy of the image and the version check will be bypassed.
