Drag and Drop in Windows 7 does not function...

Hi everyone..
Thank you for having a look at this question... I have a Dell Studio laptop which has 4GB ram and a core 2 duo processor with a Windows 7 OS.. The problem with this laptop is that, I am not able to drag and drop icons on the desktop nor in the folders... Drag and Drop never functions.. I feel convinient using Drag and drop and now this is a big nuisance for me as I am not able to freely move my desktop icons nor drag and drop the files into folders as and when required.. I also unchecked the auto arrange Desktop in the context menu.. I tried in Safe Mode.. I used a bunch of Registry cleaners, C Cleaners and what not everything.. But I am not able to solve this problem.. Can you please let me know how I should solve this problem...

Also I also have another problem during the Startup of my computer.. Once I start my computer and once all Icons and taskbar come , I try to open any application or any program like IE or Firefox and when I open it, the windows freezes and says not responding.. I try opening "Task Manager " from the Task Bar and and even right click does'nt function... Hence , I feel as if everything freezes up and so I need to hit "Alt+Ctlrl+Del" for opening Taskmanager.. This sounds very wierd for me as I have to do this same operation every time..My configuration is above mentioned and I also share this little info with you.. My hard Disk memory usage is about 268Gb of 280Gb with a single partiotion. Can it be the possible reason for this sluggish nature... I am eagerly waiting for the reply.. I would be very happy for the reply I get.. Thanks in advance...:):):)

Concerning the icons- the first thing you can do is check you have not 'locked' them with Auto Arrange?

Right click an empty area of the desktop/Explorer window and click View to see if Auto Arrange is selected? To unlock the icons so that you can move them again, click Auto Arrange again to clear the check mark.

Thanks for the kind reply you have given me... But as I already mentioned in my Question "I also unchecked the auto arrange Desktop in the context menu".. So i tried it, I almost did everything, but nothing worked out.... So can you try any other way like any registry fix or something else to solve this weird problem which is irritating me.. Tis all good pharish- I 'read' your post 2/3 times and still it didn't register- which is all my own doing.

Gotta leave for the hospital now as my daughter has just gone into labor- will have a think and post any other suggestions I have.

I think your second issue should be dealt with first. Try your best to free up at least 20GB of space, and see what difference it makes.

If you absolutely cannot free up the space, can you at least move some data to a writable disc?

The system needs a decent amount of free space to function, I'd see what happens here first, and then address the other issue.

This sounds too simple to work, but it worked for me:

1) Find an affected icon.
2) Click and HOLD the icon with the Left mouse button.
3) Press Esc while holding the Left mouse button.

I realize this is an old thread, but since it is getting hits and is not answered, try this:

When you mention "I've tried a bunch of registry cleaners" it sets off an alarm since we see many problems with this scamware which never works and almost always messes up Win7.

If it's possible you still have a System Restore point before you used any of these then I would try it now to get back before you ruined your OS.

However if this is the factory preinstalled Win7 then that is the worst possible install of Win7 once can have anyway, larded with bloatware and duplicate utilities which interfere with better versions built into Win7. I would do what most tech enthusiasts do and follow these steps to get and keep a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7. Be sure to read the Special Note for Dell Owners at the end of the tutorial.

Otherwise I'd Clean Up Factory Bloatware to see if that helps. Use the recommended AV, turn off everything except AV at startup, check System file integrity, System resources for solutions.
