Unscheduled shut down

Following a restart from a unscheduled shut down i received the message. (Failed to connect to a windows service) Windows could not connect to the system event notification service service. This problem prevents standard users from logging onto the service as an administrative user, you can review the system event log for details about why the service didnt respond. Besides this the icons in the system tray appear as black and white symbols. I did a system restore to a point before the unscheduled shut down and it restored satisfactory, The computer seems to work fine with the exception it is slower to start up and the message and system tray icon remain as before. I have visited the event log but due my limited experience in such matters not sure what the next step maybe to revert things back to normal. My computer is windows 7 home premium. Will appreciate any help that can be offered.

Here's hoping for a simple solution.. I have seen where a winsock reset has fixed this error so you could try that for starters. Run an elevated command prompt (right-click > run as administrator), then run the command "netsh winsock reset". After doing so, restart your computer.

Also, you could check to see if the System Event Notification Service is started and set to start automatically. To do so; Right-click Computer > Manage > Services.

Hi Joni, if the reset doesn't work, Open a Elevated Command Prompt in Windows 7, and run SFC /scannow

What caused the unscheduled shutdown?

Carried out the winsock reset, after restart everything reverted to normal. I would like to thank you all for your input into this problem of mine, without the help and expertise that you offer them it would not be possible for such people as me with limited knowledge to overcome these problems. Once again many thanks for taking the trouble and your time to assist me in rectifying things.
