Deleted Folders Or Folders That Have Been Renamed Still Show

    Hello,

I am using Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit and I am ecountering a very weird problem.

I have a folder on my Desktop that I created called "My Travel Shots" that contains several folders inside of it. These sub folders within "My Travel Shots" contain .jpg files.

I can rename or delete these sub folders and they appear to be renamed or deleted.

HOWEVER!!.... When I use Internet Explorer and I am on a website where I can upload my photos.... I encounter a very strange thing!!

When I browse to my desktop folder "My Travel Shots" to select the pictures I want to upload, I can see all my deleted sub folders. I also can see the sub folders with their old names, along with the sub folders that have their new names.

For example... today I renamed a sub folder "Italy01" into "Italy June 2010".

When I was on a website where I was going to upload my photos... I used Internet Explorer to browse to "My Travel Shots" where I could see both the "Italy01" and "Italy June 2010" as subfolders, when I really only should be seeing, "Italy June 2010".

It's like Internet Explorer is seeing folders that are no longer there!! And clicking on these ghost folders even shows the .jpg files inside!!!

Refreshing the folders view when I am in Internet Explorer and even rebooting the machine doesn't fix this problem.

I also have deleted my Temporary Internet Files, and even applied the folders "hotfix" that I found on Microsoft's Website, but it doesn't seem to resolve the problem either.

I've also scanned for viruses but nothing was found even in safe mode.

Should I try rebuilding the index? Or should I do an image restore of my computer?

I have had this folder on my desktop for a year and have had no problems until now. I am always constantly renaming and deleting the sub folders inside of it and never encountered any problems until this week when I did some Windows Updates, so I'm baffled as to what is causing the problem.

BTW, I am the only person who operates my computer and I am operating it as an Administrator.

If you missed the output from Check Disk, then following will be useful:

    VIEW CHKDSK (CHECK DISK) LOG

The log giving the results from running Check Disk can be viewed using the Event Viewer.

WIN key | type EVENTVWR.MSC | ENTER key

Wait for the Summary of Administrative Events section in the middle pane to be populated.

In the left-pane, navigate to Windows Logs | Application

In the middle-pane, click on the word Source.
This will sort the events by Source

Scroll to find the event(s) titled WinInit and with the Event ID 1001.

Under the General tab, there is a scrollable display of the output from CHECK DISK.

You can click in that scrollable area, select all of the text with Ctrl + A and then paste your selection into NotePad, WordPad, Word or the editor of your choice.

You can copy and paste the event info, time, and so forth as follows:
    right-hand pane,
in the Event 1001, wininit section,
    ….. click on Copy,
……….. click on Copy Details as Text.
Now you can paste into your favorite editor.

    Hi Guys,

I did some research and this sounds like what I am experiencing. It sounds like this is a problem that has not been fixed by Microsoft as of yet..

It appears to be a Windows Explorer (WE) problem. Even though I am using IE to upload pictures... when I am browsing to the folder on my desktop to select a photo to upload, I am using WE at that point.

Interesting issue indeed. You can try using another software like Unlocker which allows files/folders to be deleted not using WE .

Have a look at this post on an earlier thread. It was the IE cache that was the problem.Forum browse to Library oddity....

    Hi Kado897,

I think it is most definitely related to the problem that they were discussing on the Microsoft Forums because they also mentioned this quirky behavior seems to occur with desktop files and also with libraries.

(BTW I don't have this desktop file included my library)

Anyway.... let me clarify on my post of yesterday (see post #5)... that I would assume (and I am just guessing here, so feel free to correct me if I am wrong) that when one is using IE to browse to a picture that is located inside one's desktop files, that WE is coming into play in some soft of fashion???

It's weird though because when I am viewing things from just the desktop end, everything looks fine. There are no ghost folders or files of any kind. If I rename a folder it stays renamed and it doesn't show another folder with the old name. If I move files, they stay moved. There are no files appearing or remaining in the old location.

It's only when I am browsing out to my desktop from IE... using that window that IE creates that allows one to browse and select a file to upload... that I see old folders (that I previously renamed or that I had deleted) and files in places that they shouldn't be, because I had previously moved them to some other location.

But anywho... I restored my system back to a system image I made in May and I am not experiencing any problems at the moment.

If I do encounter this bug again, I'll let you all know, thanks.

I think that what happens is that IE caches the file structure at a point in time. Probably when the folders are first accessed. When you delete or rename a folder this cache is not invalidated. IE then uses this invalid structure somehow in the dialogues. I don't know how long this cache remains but it certainly lasts longer than the current session. I think that clearing the cache from within IE doesn't clear "recent" entries, which is why I used CCleaner to do the job. I'm surprised that this is the same in IE9 though. I don't use IE any more so personally I'm not too bothered but MS should fix the problem.
