hey guys have anyone here used a separated PSU for extra power and other purpose like SLI VGA? while your another PSU is normally powering your motherboard,ram,dvd,and CPU, i know i seen Thermaltake Toughpower standalone PSU for VGA but what about ordinary PSU? anyone
Hi Kentucky777, to answer your question, yes I understand it can be done but is pretty difficult. But, your specs indicate you have a 600W PSU which should run whatever kind of card you want to put into the machine. If you need more power, perhaps a better alternative would be to replace your current PSU with a larger one.
hi essenbe thanks for feed back yes i have 600 psu indeed although its generic i can't even run geforce 9800GT properly with it i was force to remove my dvd-r just to run it good now im getting a new gpu for SLI so was i planning it for 2nd generic PSU
If your PSU is running that bad, it would appear that it will fail shortly. I would suggest you get a new PSU from a top rated company like Corsair, Antec or Seasonic. That will be much simpler and from the sounds of it, you will be replacing the PSU soon anyway.
If i invested in 2 pricey vid cards i probably wouldn't risk a generic PSU to power my investment...
i'll take that advice thanks , and yeah came to think of it is kind a complicated running 2 PSU at the same time also the bootup button need to be setup too ..i guess i have to buy branded one
Kentucky, you have a 600W PSU. In reality, based on your specs, a good 350-400W psu should power your rig. And from what you tell me, you had to unplug the CD/DVD to get it to work. As I recall, a DVD will only pull about 20W. That tells me your PSU is already seriously degraded and you are running it at 100% of it's ability now. Without a new quality PSU, you are risking all of the components in your computer.
If you are going to run 2 GFX cards in SLI, they will need dependable power. Yes, get a good one as essenbe suggested. Check these Power Supply calculators.
Afterthought: If you are staying with nVIDIA, stay away from the new driver 275.xx and go fo the 270.xx instead, it's more stable.
thanks i found some website how to create a standalone PSU however i take essenbe advice probably i really a real PSU to my rig
