    Laptop help please?

I am having a dell inspiron 5110 which i purchased a month ago, the reseller showed me the laptop, it was not having any OS installed , which means no pre-installed features either.? is it normal or fine, or i got pawned by the reseller?
Also i don't know if i am having DELL FACTORY RESTORE thing to restore my laptop in factory condition, would i be having it or not.

Is it 2nd hand, because i bought it 1st hand and paid price for a new one indeed. Its been a month old now, i recently had a BSOD too, but got fixed as it was under warranty? Did reseller screw me? Or can it happen and do laptop come without OS?

Welcome to the Windows 7 Forums.

Sometimes vendors who resell laptops wipe the operating system from the hard disk as they don't have a legitimate copy of windows to install. Some wipe it because of critical data removal.

If you can restore the original factory settings, you will end up with a valid windows operating system as Dell is an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) and provides (in most cases) a legitimate operating system for their systems.

I recommed restoring the original factory settings, Or at the least, look up the Service Tag that should be attached to your computer. Look this up on the Dell site and maybe, just maybe they will send you the correct disks to re-install the proper OS to your computer. Or at a small charge for the disks.

    Good luck

    Rich

PS: how could you get a BSOD without an OS on the computer???

Its tough to say and it varies from brand to brand. E.g. some HP business laptops have a FreeDOS option. In some countries, MS allows OEMs to distribute notebooks without windows preinstalled and you can purchase systems with FreeDOS installed. Though if you're in the US, I doubt this applies. Important thing is this option is mostly reserved for business laptops and is usually not available in consumer laptops like Inspiron- doing that would create all kinds of hassles at the retail level and support level, best to have uniformity there.

You should contact Dell in your country and ask them to clarify.

Here is the information to contact Dell for support:

    Contact Technical Support
    Contact Order Support
    Contact Dell Sales
    International Support

If you can't get the information you need from one of these Dell numbers, you can ask them exactly what department you need to speak with, and get the name of that department and the telephone number.

In all honesty, as the computer is only a month old, I'd be asking for my money back.

If it was a brand new Dell machine it would have had Windows pre-installed and there would been Certificate Of Authenticity (COA) sticker and a Windows OEM Product Key on the base of the machine.

You should also get at least a year's warranty (repair or replace).

Please do contact Dell as advised earlier by Imperfect1. If nothing else they should be able to stop this guy selling what appear to be dodgy computers.

I am having a years warranty too. I purchased it on 9th July, when i checked warranty status that time, it said my warranty will start from 20june 2011 to 21june 2012.

Have you checked the bottom of the laptop for the COA sticker and product key?

If you don't have them you need to contect Dell and let them know what is going on.

That is an excellent suggestion. It could be one of those systems that come out of e.g. China. The deal sounds very strange. I would contact Dell in any case to find out what is going on.

I agree. This sounds more and more like your reseller is not operating honestly or honorably. If you don't get COMPLETE satisfaction regarding ALL of these issues return the computer and get your money back. Also, as seavixen32 suggested, notify Dell to inform them of what this reseller is doing. And when you repurchase the computer, buy it directly from Dell or from a reseller you trust. (Yes, it may cost you a little bit more --- but at least you'll be getting a verifiable new system that is properly loaded with the software that you should have.) Then, if you have problems, you'll have the full support of the seller behind you.
