    Win 7 Queries

    Hello forum,
I should like clarification on a couple of matters.
It has not been necessary yet, but I should like to know the best way to enter
Safe Mode at start up. Tapping the F8 key, as I did in Vista, does NOT achieve this. I know there is a way in msconfig but I have heard that people encounter problems in this i.e. continually starting in a Safe Mode "loop" and unable to start normally.

The other point is that the ID number that appears in System Information is different to the one appearing on the inside of the Win 7 disc download box. The OS was put on my machine by a technician and I am unable to contact him.
Still enthralled by how rapid and trouble free this OS is.
    Any views ?

Here are all the commonly used methods. I do not know of anyone who has problems with the, traditional, F8, and I would and do use that
To find the key number, the use of magical jelly beans will give the correct number.

    Hi Richard,
Thanks but the point is F8 simply does not work for me. I should have to use msconfig method if needed but the point is academic since no problem is there.

Another point. I cannot stop the PC telling me that it can find no anti-virus in the health report. The conventional method fails and I do not seem to be able to turn off this notification.

The F8 key really should work. You have to keep tapping it before the loading windows screen appears.
I would strongly suggest that you have an anyivirus program. A good free one is Microsoft security essentials , but you can next time that message appears, click on the flag in the lower right of the taskbar, it will take you to control pannel. There you should see an option to turn off messages. But, I still strongly suggest an antivirus program, or your windows will not continue to run smoothly.

I agree with Essenbe on all points. You probably are not doing the safe mode correctly, as I never heard of it not working. You are well aware that I have always advocated the use of Security Essentials. Why not use an anti virus manufacted by the people that know Windows best. In addition, the use of Malwarebytes is strongly recommended, for weekly scans.
Another piece of software Securnia PSI, will inform you when any security features on any software has been updated and allows you to install the newer version.
Hope that you are enjoying Seven.

    Hi members,
I have, and have always had, Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes on my PC and would not envisage ever using same without these vital accessories. Have also gone to Action Centre and turned off the specific notifications. The F8 procedure still refuses to operate. I am doing it correctly as I had no difficulty in Vista in performing the F8 tapping routine. Puzzling.

Check in disk management to see whether you have a 100 MB active system partition. As far as I'm aware, if you haven't, you'll get no response from the F8 key.

If I'm wrong, one of our experts will soon be along to put me right.

I was just discussing that with another member. He cannot get into it. I have no 100MB partition and I can get into it. I don't know what the difference is.

F8 works on the hundreds of Win 7 installs I've worked with...the 100MB partition has no bearing on it. You have a keyboard issue. Period.

Shut down your pc incorrectly and when it restarts it should give you some options there.
