I'll take the quirkiness of the gaming to XP not having DirectX 10 any day

Seriously, though, having used Vista for 2 years, I like W7 a *lot* - and I am one of the few that likes Vista overall better than XP because of the security features and that make it a lot tighter than XP....

Vista and now 7 in 32 and 64 bit.

It is easy enough to change the default opening of Windows Explorer. Open the properties and, after explorer.exe, put in the path you wish for example %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /n, /e, C:\
I have put this in, on a new installation, since Windows 98.
In this case, /n opens single pains/windows; /e maintains the default view and C:\ is od course, the path you want. You can put anything you like there. You could even put in shortcuts, with different parameters, for any of your other needs.
I also do not use the libraries, and they do not appear in the left had side. Otherwise they are pretty much organised as you say.
I agree about the shutdown time. On a clean install, it was pretty good. I applied the old Win98 trick for the wait to kill" function and it was then really fast. After installing my software, although nothing is running resident, it now takes a darn sight longer than XP to shut down.

I jus reread the OP. Again, all things are possible. If you browse around your Dll's and *exe files, you will be surprised at what icons you can find. Here is a small example of what I have on my task/quicklaunch bar
