Windows 7: windows 7 won't start

windows 7 won't start

i recently damaged the screen on my inspiron n5030 - the corner of it got crushed a little by the lid closing on something placed just at the side of the keyboard - i mention that just to say that there was no violent impact or anything.
I bought a new screen and fitted it - simple enough - and when i powered up everything seemed ok.. except.. i got this odd message that windows didn't recognise the battery (original Dell battery only a few months old) & that it wouldn't be charged. Apart from that, everything was fine. I looked up a solution to the battery thing online and tried one which involved powering on/off with/without battery. But after i completed that, windows will no longer start. The screen functions ok, comes up with the 'starting windows' graphic, but then goes grey, with the cursor arrow mid-screen. You can move the cursor with the touch pad, but that's it - nothing else at all. I have tried running windows repair - and i've tried running a system restore, to a win7 version a week or so ago.. still no joy - i get exactly the same problem.. windows won't start.

Any ideas?

i'll add a little to that. When i run startup repair it says it can't repair the problem automatically.
under problem details the significant ones (i think) are these:
problem signature04: 21200642
problem signature05: autofailover
problem signature07: CorruptVolume

does that help?

Try resetting the BIOS to optimal defaults: Clear CMOS - 3 Ways to Clear the CMOS - Reset BIOS

Are you using the WIn7 DVD or System REpair CD which doesn't rely on possibly corrupted System files to run Startup REpair repeatedly? Try also System Restore from the tools list. System Repair Disc - Create

You can copy out your files using DVD/Repair CD: Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console

Then run Dell factory recover from its partition at boot:
Dell Restoring Your Computer´s Software to the Factory Settings
Dell Recovery Partition - restoring F8 link

Or find a retail Win7 installation DVD to clean reinstall with the Product Key on COA sticker, following these steps to get a perfect clean reinstall of factory OEM: Reinstalling Windows 7
