search and replace in file name

I'm trying to shorten up some too-long file path names.
I have some recurring strings that I could just delete, but for the life of me I can't find any search & Replace function for file names.
    Is there a way?

    Elevated Prompt

You probably can find some third party soft ware to accomplish this. Other than that It will be done at an elevated prompt. The snip is for the "rename" command. Type rename or ren with /? at the prompt for full syntax. this does not do a search.
    Hope this helps.

    Hammerhead,
Not going to work because I'm removing a recurring portion of the file name.
More specifically, I scan news in the morning and SAVE AS as html files.
Most publications include the name of their organization in the file name.
    For example:
A Story About Something - The New York Times
So, I wind up with dozens/hundreds of files with the string "The New York Times" which I'd like to remove.

    Download "Name It Your Way".

    It's free.

Name It Your Way (NIYoW) - Professional free utility for mass renaming of files and folders

It's a renaming utility that does exactly what you need. It can rename a thousand files in a few seconds.

    For instance, you could:

Delete specific text strings from any location within file name

Replace text string A with text string B at any location in the file name

Delete x number of characters from any position in the file name

Learning curve is fairly easy due to a wizard.

You choose the files to be renamed and then make a custom "rule" to govern the renaming for the chosen files. A given rule can be saved for later re-use or you can instead just make a new rule each time, depending on the specific requirements. Rules are made through a series of 4 or 5 dropdown boxes and then applied to the chosen files. You get a preview of what the renamed files will look like after the renaming. All changes can be reversed.

    FreeCommander

FreeCommander has a mass rename function (with quite a few options). :)

I use it to rename blocks of anime pictures/wallpapers.
