    How to disable "Open File Security Warning"

    I would like to disable the "Open File Security Warning" that says "Do you want to run this file?" whenever I double click on an .exe I download. I have Windows 7 Home Premium, so I don't have the group policies editor. I have tried setting a registry value: HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Associations, value DefaultFileTypeRisk to 6152, but this did no good. This is the only entry under Associations, incidentally.

    Is there a way to disable this message on my system (other than unblocking each .exe file)?

    Depending on what file and where, maybe several different ways.

    What file.
    Where.
    What error message?

    Hello Xpda,

    Since this was from a downloaded file, you might see if the option in the tutorial below will be able to "unblock" the file to stop the "Open File Security Warning" message. :)

    Open File - Security Warning : Unblock File

    Hope this helps,

    What File: Any file that has been downloaded from the internet.
    Where: Anywhere on any hard drives.
    What error message: The dialog box is titled "Open File Security Warning", and the main error message (or informational message) is: "Do you want to run this file?"

    I would like to stop this dialog from popping up every time I run an .exe that I download.

    I can do that, but I don't like having to mess with every file that I download. I am looking for a setting that will disable this dialog altogether, no matter the file attributes.

    Ok heh, post edit...

    If you are using IE to DL the file, I've only seen that message when the security settings are set to maximum for the internet zone. At one click up from maximum it shouldn't do that, but also if you trust the site you are DLing from you can put that site into the trusted sites zone and then it should also stop.
    Now there are other things that can affect this. I.e. other programs that also play with the trusted/untrusted flagging system of windows 7 in which case you may have to set settings in that program. Also some AV software may actually flag the file as well...

    Would need to know more about what program was DLing the file and what AV software you have. THen can maybe do some more searching...

    That message comes up when Firefox, Chrome, or IE downloads an .exe file and I try to run it. I do not want to change the zone flag on the file. I am looking for a way for Windows 7 to ignore it. It is supposed to be possible using Group Policies, but I don't have Group Policies in Home Premium.

    Just use Streams to delete the Alternative Data Streams.

    These two registry entries will disable the message:
    Code:
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Attachments]
    "SaveZoneInformation"=dword:00000001
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Associations]
    "LowRiskFileTypes"=".zip;.rar;.nfo;.txt;.exe;.bat;.com;.cmd;.reg;.msi;.htm;.html;.gif;.bmp;.jpg;.avi;.mpg;.mpeg;.mov;.mp3;.m3u;.wav;"

    For others with the same issue, here's a tutorial to make doing this even easier. :)
