Thanks Nigel (I'm only 12-16 miles away from you!)

Well it says it's finished indexing.

And I still only 15 pdfs with the word in the title only.

Can I call Microsoft for free as I only bought the PC in Feb this year, and it's still under warrantee?

Or will it cost an arm and a leg?

    thanks

I've just tried mine and it's working quite well, so it can work

As for contacting Microsoft, I doubt that they will provide any one to one help for anything like free, it's normal to provide a limb just as a deposit

I can't see any reason why it's not working for you as, as far as I can see, you have everything set-up the same as I do.

The only thing I can suggest is that you have a look at the adobe forums as they supply the filter, (Another reason why you would not get help from MS as they will blame Adobe), maybe someone there has a similar issue.

The problem is that this issue could be caused by some other software that you have installed or not installed, and unfortunately the only way to tie this down is often to find some reference to the issue which mentions some software you also have installed.

You could try removing all trace of the iFilters and see if the STD text filter will work or even re-installing the filter

    OK thanks Nigel.

If you were going to uninstall all trace of both ifilters, where is, and what was the first one called please?

    thanks again

Adobe (just to be different ), place the iFilter in it's own folder with a lot of other "stuff" there is a read.me file with some info in that you may want to have a look at

on my system this is in ...

    C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe PDF iFilter 9 for 64-bit platforms\.....

I would have to assume it does the same for the 32bit

Ifilter explorer that I linked to earlier in this thread will give you definitive information on your system

Just came across this old post ....

PDF content indexing not working with 64-bit iFilters

If the files you are trying to index are from an older system or have been around awhile it may be worth while re-setting the files properties to give your actual username full rights - may be nothing but worth a try.

    thanks Nigel for that,

I don't know how to set the file properties but if you mean I should do this inside each individual file, it will not be worth it as there are thousands of them. I have seven years worth of work on my hard drive!

Do you know if there is a way of setting security properties for all pdfs?

If not, I will try asking the guy in that thread via PM.

    thanks again

PS also I just did a test for a pdf I downloaded last week, and it did not show up, so it's not just the old stuff; it's all pdf content.

Setting properties is often presented as a dark art but is really fairly simple ...

Depending on how you have your files organised you can go to the root (top) folder and this will cascade down to the folders beneath

Rather than me write everything out have a look at our tutorial Here ....

    OK thanks a lot Nigel,

I am joining the Adobe forum first to see if they have additional info.

As it suggests doing a system restore before doing the security changes, it looks like things could go wrong, so I want to be fully prepared.

    cheers

    Hi,

OK I posted on the Adobe forum and no replies, but then the other Qs seem to take at least a few days to get a response.

In the meantime, the other thing you suggested Nigel, was this link:

PDF content indexing not working with 64-bit iFilters

And JayCee who had a very similar problem said:
"If I copy the files from a data disk to the current system disk then they are indexed. I haven't investigated further because I currently have plenty of space on my system disk, and these files aren't my primary copy and can stay on the system disk. So, I imagine this was a problem with security... "

So what is the System Disk? And where is it please?

    thanks
