@LordBob Just out of curiosity, what issues do you have with L4D and steam? I play L4D all the time in Win 7. Granted I'm at 7229 now, but I don't remember having any issues from the 7000+.

It was mostly on my laptop in Florida, but I have been freezing on certain servers, as well as other random freezing.
Also, the Half-Life 2 demo won't launch. Nor would EVE launch from steam on my laptop. :/

1 major disappointment for me is the lack of "classic mode" within the Control Panel. That new system is a PITA to find anything. I have to use the darn search thing all the time just to find simple things...and I'd rather not find it that way. It's really my only significant complaint.

not that it's microsoft's fault, but some vendors like creative are too lazy to make new drivers that are compatable with windows 7, one of my PCs has a creative SB Live! and it doesn't work very well with windows 7, the driver that windows 7 uses for it, seems to work but not if I raise the volume, then I start to hear strange noise and some sounds interruptions while playing music or video, the sound seems to stop for a fraction of a second then contunie and so on. it was working fine on XP, so I returned to XP on that PC. my main PC that runs windows 7 has a realtek built-in audo that comes with the intel motherboard and seems to work fine but not 100%, sometimes if the volume is very high I get light sound interruptions as well, not sure if it's a windows 7 issue yet though I have installed XP as well on my Main computer and will try to see if the issue is still there or not.

another issue is memory, my old PC has only 512MB RDRAM ( Or rambus ) which can not be upgraded easily, for now I run XP on it, I tried windows 7 before on the same PC but it was kind of slugish compared to XP, I presume because windows 7 still eats more memory than XP.

other than those two issues, everything seems to work fine under windows 7.. I love it, I also installed it to my friend on his laptop who only has 512MB of ram and he said he loves it , despite the slow load times since he only has 512MB of memory.. he says the interface is much easier to use than XP

Hey all,

I think that Windows 7 is indeed a huge step forward, but I do unfortuantely still have a few gripes These are more general Windows annoyances rather than W7 specific items.

- There are too many places where settings can be saved for software, Users, registry, ini files .etc, it is hard to clean-up completely after an application is uninstalled.
- The registry is still a mess, why didn't they move to a full XML system instead? I realise it's a huge change, but I think it would be worth it.
- There is very little consistency with the GUI if you look into the details. As soon as you start adding 3rd party applications, things get even worse. Now with the addition of the "Ribbon" UI, you have yet another style of interface.
- There are still a few tiny bugs in the final RTM, e.g., Documents, Music .etc have the "My" prefix in Explorer. This can be fixed easily, but it is a bit annoying.
- The Intellipoint drivers & issues with Microsoft mouse scrollwheel since Vista are insanely bad, I can not believe they let this happen!! Final RTM has the same issue, for more detail, check out my post: Microsoft Lazer Mice Scroll Wheel Problems in Vista/W7

I have been playing around with OSX for the last 2 days after being on Microsoft products since DOS 5, and the things I mentioned above were the main things that were much better in OSX. Application interfaces are extremely consistent in OSX, menus all look the same, dialogs all look the same .etc I have installed maybe 100 apps on OSX to try out and the OS doesn't get slower, which is something I still find in Windows 7, even though it's so much better than XP in this regard.

Overall though, I think Microsoft are onto a winner with Windows 7. Windows 8 might be a great time for an overhaul though, strict GUI standards, 64-bit only, a better solution to the registry, a more unified application update system .etc

Cheers

You need to realize that this is not a problem with 7 the OS.
It is a problem with the driver.
If they have not updated or fixed the driver you will have the problem.

So, this is not a negative on the OS, it is a negative on the Mouse Driver.

Are you using hybrid sleep? If you are, try without it.

I would agree with you mate, but the issue occurs with the built-in Windows 7 drivers too, and the issue occurs with applications included in Windows 7 (e.g. Photo Preview).

End of the day, the thing should work with MS mice.
