In taskbar properties, disable Aero Peek
Aero Peek is disabled. I still get thumbnail/popup on mouse hover

"Taskbar Properties > Taskbar > Taskbar buttons: Never combine"... is not what I mean. It still groups all similar programs together, however in a spread out fashion across the taskbar.
This is a contradiction in terms, they are either grouped or they are spread out on the taskbar.
It isn't a contradiction. Win7 spreads them out, however, cluster/groups similar items together. As a graphical representation of this phenomenon, lets say I initiate instance 1 of windows explorer (WE1), followed by instance 1 of firefox (FF1). On the task bar it's shown as: WE1 | FF1. If I open up another instance of WE, Win7 has it spread out like this: WE1 | WE2 | FF1. XP, however, would arrange it in order of temporal execution: WE1 | FF1 | WE2. Hence W7 groups items, even when spread out.

But is this really such a big deal to go back to XP with all it's own quirks?
If you set W7 up efficiently, you hardly ever have to go to the startmenu anyway.
It's not these tiny quirks that made me go back to XP, it's actually the performance issue which I briefy addressed in my initial post.

But again, what's the big deal? You install drivers on your OS, right? You install apps I presume?
What's the problem with installing one of the dozens of free mail programs out there?
Is the absence of a mail program really a reason to go back to XP?
Absolutely not a reason to revert back to XP!!! It again comes down to performance issues.

For XP you have to install a ton of drivers that W7 supports right out of the box.
Win7 has snipping tool, powershell, Mediacenter, Virtual XP and so on, and a much more efficient Explorer with libraries, favorites and a multitude of thumbnails.
Agree (except for the WE part). It even supports most of the drivers for my legacy motherboard on first install. However it didn't recognise my SATA controller to allow a streamline Win7 install on SATA (unlike Ubuntu testing). Had to resort to using a floppy.

If you are happier with the old OS, that's your choice, but what's the point posting that fact on a Windows 7 forum?
I am a member of a submarine simulator forum.
I don't see people there joining, to post that they rather play Crysis.
Um, this is a post about "What don't you like about Windows 7?" All I did was mention the things I didn't like about Windows 7, using XP as a comparison. I then just briefly noted that I will have to turn back to XP for my every day usage. Main reason being performance issues. Win7 is still installed as dual boot.

Maybe should ditch XP and move back to Windows 98?
It had a lot of things XP doesn't.
Actually, I was thinking of going back to Win2000 Now that would fly. It comes down to a compromise between speed and compatability/features.

    Cheers.

    Hi voirin

Ok, I see your main reason is performance.
That makes reverting to XP a logical step.

I have installed W7 on a few older computers and it runs equally fast to XP.
W7 is not more demanding on a CPU or mainboard than XP, on the contrary.
It uses resources a lot more efficient than XP.

The only thing that is a speed factor is the amount of ram, and especially the graphics card can spoil the fun.

Win7 has it spread out like this: WE1 | WE2 | FF1. XP, however, would arrange it in order of temporal execution: WE1 | FF1 | WE2. Hence W7 groups items, even when spread out.
I really don't understand how this is a minus?
I would think it is an improvement over XP, it makes oversight much more logical.
It was actually one of the XP quircks that thousands of users have asked MS to fix.

Um, this is a post about "What don't you like about Windows 7?"

    You're right, point taken.

Maybe it's because I don't like these negative threads.
Not that I can't take criticism on W7, it's not my baby,
but this thread and threads like these are initiated for the soul purpose of negative comments,
and are in no way constructive.
Most criticism can be written off to user's own mistakes and ignorance.
    (this doesn't apply to you)

I'd rather see constructive posts about how we can get the best out of
this OS that hasn't even been released to the general public yet,
and certainly needs a few fixes.

People should realize that every new version of any OS, software, game or what ever,
brings new features, and removes some old features.
In W7's case I would say the pros totally outweigh the cons.

The only thing left for us to do, is to get used to it,
and give it a fair chance, like we had to to do with XP.
With every OS we had to adapt to the new features, as with every new car we buy.
XP needed hundreds of updates, fixes and 3 SP's to become what it is today.
I assure you this won't be the case for W7.

    Greetings.

windows 7 supports rearranging taskbar items, just click and drag it to where you want.

Yeah, one of the things I love in 7 is the way you can pin stuff to the taskbar and it stays put and doesn't rearrange itself. Makes quicklaunch obsolete, imo.

Its just the whole libraries thing that really annoys me. I would Rather have the vista style explorer tree.
