That download is not just messenger is the full suite just minus the download manager part.

Also that link will no longer be valid if messenger is updated (I had this happen before when messenger was updated and I couldn't use it as the old version wasn't allowed to connect and I was unable to find the latest version from a site like your link and the downloader didn't work on that computer for whatever reason...) Microsoft needs a download page with the stand alone installer that is kept up to date.

This doesn't really pertain to Windows 7 though...

There are boxes to the left when you are downloading so you can select what you want
or what you don't, so what is the big virus issue with that, I don't think it could be any simpler.

When I downloaded, those boxes were greyed out. But with the uninstaller I had a selection of what I wanted to uninstall. Somehow backwards.

I had no problems when I went to download, it gave me the choice of what I wanted and I just picked Live Mail, Movie Maker and Photo Gallery and that is what I got, I've never wanted Messenger so didn't see the point of downloading and installing it.

Of course this was all done on Windows 7 launch day back in October.

I couldn't show you the boxes this time because I had downloaded everything, so they are full now
and it tells me that I have everything already, but it is as Joan said.

There is only one feature that I do not like, and that is library. Some features I can take or leave, such as Aero. But overall, I really like Windows 7

There are two or three items in which you dont have a choice (sign in assistant being one of them for example) as well when you direct people to download it they dont know any better and end up installing everything when they really only wanted the messenger. Plus I can't just store it on my USB drive for quick installation in client's homes if they request it.

The virus part was meant more in how when the downloader's registry and install/unisntall inf's get corrupt (which has happened to me more times then I care to think when making any kind of changes to its associated software) it makes it next to impossible to remove every trace of it and thus preventing any future instances of it from working properly. I was unable to install messenger once due to this fact I had uninstalled but the downloader/installer thought it was still there but there was no trace of it on my hard drive. It took me 5 hours of searching till I found someone who had extracted the MSI package manually and uploaded it.

Had microsoft simply provided the isntallation package themselves it would have saved me a lot of time and make future installations so much simplier. Less clicks, less time, and no garbage.

I agree. I wish they would provide some functionality to disable libraries completely.
