I turned on my laptop and as usual started checking my work e-mails, suddenly I realized that I was not getting search results on recent e-mails, and I noticed that at the bottom, in activity bar, it said "Windows Search is not running".
It suggested that I use the wizard to fix it, I downloaded and ran it, it then reset the search service and deleted all my past indexes.
Why would my index damage/stop by itself?
It is possible that a program on your computer had stopped the service, or some event disabled the service. It happens.
You can check the service status here:
- Click on “start” and enter “services.msc” into the search field, which will open the Service List of all Windows 7 services.
- Search through the list until you find “Windows Search”.
- Double-click on “Windows Search” and you will get the service settings window.
The settings are Automatic (Delayed Start); Automatic; Manual; and Disabled.
Mine is set on Automatic (delayed Start).
Also check on the Recovery Tab: The first & second failure should be set to "Restart the Service"
I used Mr. Fix It from Microsoft which restarted & Reset the service.
How does index include more folders? I know I can manually add folders, but if I don't, then does it add the folders I view automatically? I just added bunch of folders manually, but I don't want it slow down my computer.
Is it OK to add Program Files, since nothing much changes that often in there, also all of my users folders and my outlook of course. Most important is the outlook.
At the Start Menu, type "index", and then choose "Indexing Options" to customize the folders.
Also at the Start Menu, Choose "Help and Support" and type "Indexing".
According to the information there, you should not index system files or My Programs.
Thanks, I know how to modify it was just trying to find out if there was anyway to find out what caused it to stop it. I wonder if logs would have anything on this. Either way, I restarted and it indexed about 50,000 files already. System seems to be running OK now. If I have any sluggish performance, I will certainly remove Program Files directory.

Just realized one more problem. After I reset & rebuilt the Index, I am not seeing any search results in Outlook 2010.
It is as if there is nothing indexed from Outlook, even though Outlook and the sub folders (accounts) are all selected in the indexing options.
Try something, type msconfig inSearch, enter. In the Services tab see that Windows Search is checked, reboot and check.
Maybe you have some malware that is fritzing the system too. My sig has links to MalwareBytes and super AntiSpyware. Download each, update them and run full scans. Both are efficient finding crap others miss.
Very recently I had a similar problem. The trouble is I can't remember what I did to fix it. The troubleshooter didn't fix it. The normal delet the index and rebuild didn't fix it. Now if I can only remember what I did to fix it.
did you recently "relocate" some of the system folders?
Let's hope that something rattles the loose pieces in my cranium.
