System hangs, then display driver crahses then HDD disappears

    Hi All,
Not sure where to post this as it encapsulates a lot of components in one go.
Ever since I installed Win7 x64 Pro I have had problems.

(EDIT: I had Windows XP 64 running on the same hardware without issues)

Intermittantly I get an issue where the system sort of stutters, it hangs (no change on display, mouse doesn't move) for a second, then is okay for 1 second (mouse updates to where you moved it to, screen updates), then hangs again and repeat. It can do this up to 20 times.
Sometimes it will just hang and stay there and I will need to hard boot the machine.
Most of the time I will get a message saying "Display driver has stopped responding and has recovered" (NVIDIA drivers).
If this happens, then I lose access to 1 of my hard drives, all the partitions dissapear from Explorer and the hard drive is no longer reported by Device Manager. If I want to get the Hard Drive partitions back I have to reboot the machine.

In the Event Viewer I get the following:

Serveral of these one after another:
    WARNING Disk Event ID 51
An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk1\DR1 during a paging operation.

    Followed by:
    WARNING Ntfs Event ID 57
The system failed to flush data to the transaction log. Corruption may occur.

    Then several:
    ERROR yukonw7 Event ID 101

    With this inbetween them:
    ERROR iaStor Event ID 9

Can anyone help with this issue??

    Many thanks in advance!

How old is the installation of windows and have you tested the main hard drive for being bad, cables, ect..?

Run maker's extended HD diagnostic/Repair CD scan: HD Diagnostic

Then run Disk Check if necessary from DVD Repair console or Repair CD Command Prompt.

Next test your RAM using memtest86 CD for 5-6 passes or overnight: RAM - Test with Memtest86+

Once hardware checks out, next run SFC -SCANNOW Command

If this doesn't suffice, run a Repair Install

The installation is about 1 month old.
I have used Samsung's HD testing Tool on the drive that dissapears (It's the Samsung drive that I lose), with no reported errors.
I don't have a spare SATA cable at the moment so can't test this (all I could do would be switch it onto another drive, which I guess would be a partial test).

Memtest was run on the RAM before being installed in my machine. I will try those other tests you mentioned.

You need to test slots as well as sticks in this machine, as outlined in memtest tutorial linked.

Okay gregrocker, didn't realise about the slots. I will also run memtest today then.

One thing I should have mentioned, I was running Windows XP 64 for about 3 years before installing Windows 7 on the same hardware and didn't have these problems.
XP 64 is still on the hard drive that gets 'disabled', the other 2 drives were wiped clean and Windows 7 installed on the WDC320AAKS.

In addition I would check the drivers mentioned in log to make sure they are up to date, especially Display, chipset and whatever the Yukon device is.

The proper way to troubleshoot these errors is to google their text verbatim with number to see how others have dealt with them.

    Other troubleshooting steps
