So there's two of us. I ran the scannow, and that's the end message it gave me - no integrity violations.

Yes I get that... Hmm, can you try and see if you can reproduce the problem in Safe Mode?

Seems like I have much bigger problems than the typing issue. I just tried to uninstall a program and found that I can't make a system restore point. I'm getting a VSS error 0x80042318.

I hate that error so much, couldn't fix it so I went ahead and did a re-install from a retail copy of Windows 7. Are you running a copy of Windows that came with the computer (OEM)? If yes, I suggest you do a clean re-install... I'll help you get a clean copy and to do the process of re-installing.

Oh, God, I don't want to do that. Then I have to reinstall everything! That's definitely a last resort. I think I'll try a system restore first.

Yes, I am running the copy that with the computer, and they didn't send any disks with it. Dell! I made a restore backup disk, though.

If I do a reinstall, do I lose all my files and folders for the other programs? If I just have to reinstall the programs, but the data is retained, that wouldn't be SO bad. I also have Dell DataSafe on here and made a backup when I got the computer. But, you know, it seems like I've always had errors in the VSS service.

We can backup everything you want, your files, program files, ect. Sadly, the backups or recovery disks made are still from the pre-loaded Dell Windows 7, coming with customization's and the like. We'll need to re-install Windows 7 from the clean retail copy. I was having the exact same issues with my HP laptop, VSS not working, fingerprint refusing to work ect. Even restoring the computer from the recovery disk didn't work after a while. So in the end, I re-installed from a retail copy of Windows 7 and voila! Everything worked fine and no more issues from before :). I will guide you every step of the way, from start, to finish.

That's awfully nice of you. I don't have a retail copy, though, and don't want to buy one. I have Windows 7 Professional on here and paid extra for it, so I could use the virtual XP feature. It's come in handy for a couple of my programs.

Don't worry about the retail copy yet, you won't need to pay for a disk, you can get an ISO from online. Its perfectly legal since you have the serial key (that came with the computer). Also, what version of Windows 7 came with your computer?

It's Windows 7 Professional. I don't know how to tell what version other than that.
