Black Login Screen

I have tried to find an answer to my problem but most of the time my search results have to do with changing login screen wallpaper and icons, etc.

In Windows 7 Professional x64, when I turn my computer on, I see the blue welcome screen and then the monitor goes black except for 7 small blue dashes at the top left of the screen. The screen remains black as the computer continues to boot and then my desktop appears normally.

It never did this before (only recently started) and I first noticed it when I scheduled a boot disk check. Previously, I could observe the disk check steps running and see the results; now the screen is black while the disk check runs.

This may or may not have started after a Windows Update but I am not sure. It is a minor issue since my computer boots and runs normally but I am wondering if there is a tweak or something I can do enable me to see the screen.

I did nothing to change the screen, at least not intentionally. I periodically run a disk check and it was on such an occasion that the problem suddenly appeared. I also did not make any BIOS changes nor did I "personalize" my desktop.

I start the computer; the BIOS POST runs normally; then the screen goes black except for the blue dashes at the top of the screen; then the Welcome screen comes on (I bypass password logon); and then the desktop appears.

Normally, the disk check would run after the BIOS POST and before winlogon. It still does but the screen is black so I cannot see the disk check progress. And, as I mentioned, once at the desktop, Windows runs normally.

The issue is unrelated to the disk check; disk check only runs when I select it through the tools menu. I'm sorry if I confused you but I only used disk check as an example of what I see, or don't see, while Windows loads. In other words, the black screen (with the blue dashes) always appears whenever I logon. If I am not running disk check, it remains black while Windows loads for maybe 10-15 seconds. If I am running a disk check, then it remains black for the several minutes while the check is running. Regardless, whether disk check is running or not, I used to be able to observe the opening screen.


Since I posted this, I noticed that the forum indicated related posts or threads; I see others have had the same issue but apparently no one here was able to diagnose the problem. I am now content to ignore the issue since it is a minor inconvenience and does not affect the operating system otherwise.

After giving the matter more thought, I decided not to quit on it and wrote down everything I could think of that had to do with winlogon. Admittedly, there are some things I did not initially check simply because I either did not changed them or otherwise do any tweaking of my operating system.

To my surprise, I discovered that in the boot tab in system configuration (msconfig) the "No GUI boot" option was checked. How and why this happened I do not know (no one has access to my computer and I did not check it). I unchecked it.

Although the screen background color is black (it used to be blue) I can now see the "Windows is starting" screen with its logo; no more black screen with blue dashes. To test it, I ran chkdsk which I am now able to observe running.

Even though my logon screen has lost its pretty blue background (sorry guys) I am a happy girl. Thank you all so much for inspiring me to keep searching. Who knows, maybe someone else here who experiences this issue will find this a solution.
