I'm running win 7 x64 home premium
I backed up my registry then used ccleaner registry cleaner (I will never use it again) and now in my task manager I see *32 next to running application processes. Whole computer is dreadfuly slow and windows media player wont play anything. I restored previous registry and system restore has failed to solve the problems, any suggestions?
Try running an SFC/SCANNOW command and see if it fixes anything. If there's any corrupted or deleted system files, it'll fix them.

The applications that have the *32 are 32bit apps. There is normally nothing wrong with them, they're just not 64bit applications and that is how W7 let's you know that.
The SFC /SCANNOW is a good thing to do. Also, you can check Windows Update to make sure you have all the recommended system updates.
Have you run a virus and malware scan? If not, I would do so.
As for media files, have you tried another media player like VLC or WinAmp?
It could be an association issue. I've seen malware and viruses mess up the association of files (that's the way Windows knows to open a media player when you double click on a video file). You can right click on the file, choose "Open With", and then select the program you want to open it with and check the box at the bottom so that Windows will always open those types of files with the program you chose.

Just a word of advice to folks considering using a registry cleaner. DO NOT USE THEM!!!!!
They were somewhat useful with Win XP, but Vista and 7 don't work well with them! The chance for damage is great!

This isn't technically good advice, unless you add a few caveats. Reputable reg cleaners are safe to use, work well, and actually provide a purpose. It's been beaten to death, but there have been plenty of examples of how a reg cleaner will help resolve some issues. CCleaner is highly recommended and does a great job. It also gives you a one-click option to backup those changes in case something does go wrong, but on countless systems over the past couple of years...I haven't had to use the backup.
In your experiences, they may be somewhat 'dodgy'. But most people use cleaners such as CCleaner which is quite trustworthy. I use it every few days or so and see no problem with my computer. In fact, it clears a few GB worth of rubbish when I run it!
So, continue using your registry cleaner. But stick with CCleaner or other reputable software. Anything without positive reviews are most likely to be malware or something similar.
I wasn't really addressing you guys specifically, because most folks who commented have decent knowledge of Win OS. I was addressing noobs who don't have much of a clue.
I know that countless times I have seen posts over on the MS Answers site with people thinking they were helping their system with a registry cleaner and being over zealous and trying to do too much cleaning!!!! In the end they delete or corrupt essential registry entries and have to re-install their OS.
That is why I put the comment about an expert instructing them to do so and helping them with selections.
You know there have to be numerous nonmembers looking for help and seeing something posted then they go hells bells and screw things up worse. I'm just trying to alert these people, to be careful!

I have to agree. I have been using CCleaner for years with Windows 7 without any problems at all due the registry cleaning and I am using it several times a day (yes, I know; it's paranoid). The only mysterious thing is that registry key
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.mepg\OpenWithProgids ......as well as the one for \.mpg\ .... keep returning after
having fixed them. I am not an expert so I just leave them "as is". Hardly any other registry keys are ever found that have to be fixed.
That's why it is important to make sure the comments and advice are completely accurate. There are shady reg cleaners that I would avoid at all costs, but there are a few that do the job properly, allow quick "undos" and don't harm the system, like CCleaner. In addition to that, CCleaner has several other useful features.
