The User Profile Service service failed the logon

I have a Windows Vista CPU that was updated a few months ago to Windows 7 Home Premium. Last week, we could no longer log on to this CPU and received the message in the title. Please note, we know the password...The machine no longer recognizes it. (strike 1)

Complication: We only have one account on the CPU which is an administrator. So, we simply cannot log on to the machine normally. (strike 2)

However, I can log on in Safe Mode. I changed the password in Safe Mode, restarted, went to the normal login screen, and still cannot log in with the new password. (strike 3...I'm out)

I have yet to find help for my specific problem. I hope someone knows what to do. It would be greatly appreciated.
