When you save JPEGS onto desktop, thumbnail displays sideways.

When you save JPEGS onto desktop, thumbnail displays sideways. Then when you doubleclick it, it then displays correctly fullsize.

    Any reason for this?

It might be smashing the thumbnail into a standard icon format size, and rotating the image so that it "fits" better.

    That'd be my guess.

What happens if you increase the size of your desktop icons?

These come from a camera don't they? It could be two things, what sometimes happens when you put a camera on its side. The meta data or lack of meta data, that tells photo viewers if the camera itself was rotated and the pictures needs to be rotated to match. Not all cameras have that capability. Next while the picture might have been rotated, the thumbnail that is embedded in the image was not updated. Windows uses the embedded thumbnail when it can.
