Ubuntu 9.10 and Windows 7

I don't know about all you guys, but I had bad problems with wireless on Ubuntu before, but when I downloaded 9.04 everything worked, it recognized my HP printer too. I have ATI, and NVIDIA cards working perfectly also. The only thing I've had problems with was a new sound card that will most likely work in Ubuntu Karmic (9.10) when it comes out. All you people that have tried linux a long time ago like in 2007, (or 2001), it wasn't that good at all. I've beta tested Windows 7, and it was good and all but i'm also focused on security. If you guys like to pay 100+ or an OS go ahead, but i'm tired of the junk that microsoft comes out with. Also opensource software is not junk either, its actually better because people can change it to what it suits them and your not sitting around with closed-source software wishing blah blah would be in it. As for Windows I'm tired of looking around for software on the internet and having to pay for it. And every time you install it you have to put updates, and drivers on it and it takes too long. And how many of you like the nice blue-screen-of-death, and calling for support and getting some person in india who doesn't know what their talking about? Sorry windows i'm done with you.

Without sounding offensive, but I would say this: Your OS reflects your personality and interest.

Windows is more for people who do not really have a lot of time to mess with the OS and driver installation. Once installed, it is guaranteed to work 99.9% of the time. The 0.1 % are when **** does happens

Linux is more for people who enjoy the simpler joys of cmd lines and lesser eye candies.

I think Linux has *too much* eye candy, and can be distracting at times

I can get by not using the command line at all, they make the GUI very intuitive, the only reason why many view Windows as intuitive is because thats what they are used to. Speaking as a Linux user since early childhood, it was harder to get used to Windows than any distro of Linux.

The concept that program libraries were compiled into executable files just did not make sense coming from someone who is used to separate directories for binaries and libraries given any application.

First: The command line is awesome. It makes documenting a system a piece of cake and it's fantastic for writing a tutorial for how to do something. The command line allows people to cut and paste. That's so much better than go here, right click on this, go to properties, go to this tab, under the area, click on Add, etc....

Second: Lesser eye-candy???? Hardly. I've been running Beryl/Compiz for years on Linux and the eye candy runs circles around what is provided in either Vista or Windows 7. Not to mention, it runs it very smoothly on older less robust hardware.

Linux is for those who enjoy
1). Freedom to make their system run exactly how they want it
2). People who would rather not pay $100+ to run an OS on 1 computer
3). People who would rather worry less about trojans, spyware, malware.

I guess it boils down to what one is comfortable with.

But I know I'm not interested in learning a new OS just to change it to the way I want it to look when I could do it easier with windows.

I'm just going to stick to Windows family.

As dmillergv mentioned, I too am a 'senior' player who started out with DOS and for the most part, I have been quite happy with Microsoft as they have always treated me well. That said, for the last few years I have been using Linux quite successfully. Anyone who complains about drivers and installations, has not tried Fedora 11 yet. I consider Fedora 11 to be the pinnacle of Linux distros so far. However, after having tried Win7, I can't see myself going back to Linux anytime soon. Win7 is just that good.

I am comfortable with Linux and I think that it is a fine OS, that will just keep getting better. I believe that there is plenty of room for both Linux and Windows, and I recommend that everyone tries at least one Linux distro. As for me, you will have to pry my Win7 disk from my cold, dead hands.

Oh I couldn't agree more with this statement.

Long Long time ago, I tried a distro of Linux... but I wasn't able to get it run the way I want it. I could give myself more time to learn it, But I kinda gave up after 1 week and went back to Windows XP. It has a learning curve that I presume, one must have lotsa patience for it.

Yes, there is absolutely plenty of room for both of them. For me, I really need both of 'em. I support them both at work and use them both at home. I'm just glad that 9+ years ago that I sat down and installed a Linux distro and sat there and struggled at first trying to make it do anything. A few books later, a certification exam or two, 7+ years of supporting them professionally....I am as comfortable using Linux as I am using Windows. Either tend to be equally as easy to run and support and troubleshooting either seems to be a pretty even task for me. It's great having options and choices.
