Is it safe to give out my hardware ID?

A software vendor is asking for my hardware ID for security reasons as part of activating his product. Is that safe to give?

Windows takes a 'hardware image' when you activate it as well.
I don't see any harm in it, unless he's specifically asking for the Ethernet device's MAC address. That's about the only thing that can really be traced to you over the net.

It would make more sense if this is one of those weird proprietary softwares that use a dongle or key for drm.
