None of my programs will open...

Just last night I updated Microsoft Office, and then rebooted my laptop. Upon restarting my computer, none of my programs will open (Notepad opens, but that's the only one I know of so far). I've ran system scans and have restarted my computer many times, I've even tried system restore, but nothing works. The computer seems to be running just fine and has no problems during start up, but then I go to open something and it simply does nothing...what the heck is going on with my laptop? Any ideas on what I can do to solve this dilemma?

Do you have an antivirus installed? If so, try to run a full system scan and see if there's a baddie somewhere in your system.
That's a start. I'd recommend downloading a couple of programs, but at this time am not sure if they would be affected by this issue.

Where are you opening these programs from, shorcuts on the desktop/taskbar I would guess. If so try opening the programs from the C:\program files or Program files(x86) location to eliminate the possibility that its just your shorcuts that are broken.

"Run" box & "Start Menu Search" box

    Can you start programs by:

    • Typing the name in the "Run" box?
    • Typing the name in the "Start Menu Search" box and then choosing them from the results list?
    • navigating to the program and using its icon?

I would remove the just installed update and restart. It might not have installed properly. You can always use Windows Update to download it again.

Are you running Windows 64 with Avast? Came across this thread a ways into the forum:
    No programs launch.

You can run SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
to see if that will get you back and opening programs again.
