    Questions about W-7 versions

I am planning to purchase a laptop with Windows 7 (W-7). My last windows version was xp, which I have used since it was introduced. What I'm trying to find out is what version of W-7 is best for me.

I'm sure there has been discussions on this forum or perhaps there is an off-web site that will answer my questions. Just "point" me in the right direction, preferably with a link.

While I'll be using the machine as a "home" user, its primary purpose is that I need a windows machine to connect to my computer at work which is running W-XP.

I'll be running some version of Office that must be compatible with my office computer which carries Office 2003, using Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Also, I travel some so I'm looking for a machine with a BluRay DVD player and HDMI output to a hotel TV.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated!

    Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

Use this link to compare the different Windows versions: Compare Windows - Microsoft Windows

Under normal circumstances, Windows 7 Home Premium is fine for home users, but as you want to connect to your work computer you'd be better choosing Windows 7 Professional, because you'll need remote desktop connection.

As we're now up to Microsoft Office 2010 you'll need to download SP3 for Windows XP and the compatibility pack to enable you to use Microsoft Office 2003 with later versions such as MS Office 2007 and 2010.

Issues that you may encounter if the computer is not fully updated to be compatible with the Office Open XML formats

Thanks for the quick info. Some good stuff to look at.

As far as using office, my apologies for not describing the issue better than I did, but I would not be logging into the office computer and using its word 2003, but would only exchange files produced in a word 2003 format. I assume the latest Office products, word, excel, and powerpoint, all have the capability to save and read the 2003 version.

Thanks for the link, suggestion and info.

    You're very welcome.

I can confirm that MS Office 2010 does give you the option of saving and reading documents in earlier versions such as MS Office 2003.
