    As you do not have an issue with shorter sleep periods but do with longer ones, check your settings for Hybrid sleep, it could be that the system is hibernating and therefore will not come out of this with the normal mouse or keyboard action

    Thanks Nigel, but I've disabled hibernation with the powercfg -h off command.

    Maybe the monitor has something to do... is the whole PC doing nothing when you move the mouse or is just the monitor which is not responding? Maybe the CPU is waking up, but not the monitor...

    All is asleep, the power light on the PC continues to flash indicating sleep state.

    Found it, I set the monitor's default input to VGA instead of AUTO. comes on fine now.
