Double clicking .txt files brings up cmd.exe - Assoc problem?

    Hi all,

The title says it all really, Notepad seems to have lost its association to .txt files somewhere along the line. If I double click a .txt file, the command line window appears. Is there a solution? I've tried re-associating txt files with Notepad to no avail

Hello Synsei, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Downloading and merging the txt option in the tutorial below may be able to help fix this. It will restore all default associations for the .txt file extension.

Default File Type Associations - Restore

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

To see if you might get lucky with a quick fix, you might see if doing a system restore using a restore point date before you had this issue may be able to fix it.

That's probably my only option to be honest, I was trying to avoid doing that though as I've installed a lot over the past week

Ah well, just being lazy I guess. I'll re-install each prog individually after the restore just to be safe. Thanks for your help Shawn

Eureka, I found a fuss free solution that works. This works on both Vista and Win7 x32/x64 and deals with any file extension association problems by the looks of it. Here's the link and follow the instructions carefully

    File Extension Type - Unassociate
