switching taskbar from window previewing to title-only prieviewing?

so i just got this computer and originally when i hovered the mouse over the running programs on the taskbar, it previewed the titles of all of the open programs at the same time (with ability to close any by hitting the corresponding X). somehow that changed - it now shows a preview of the whole window instead of the title, and it only previews whichever window (or group of similar windows) im hovering the mouse over and not the rest. how do i get it back to showing previews of ALL taskbar window titles as once???

i keep my taskbar on the left side if that matters

from what you say it seems as if it is now showing as it should. i suspect the aero manager service has changed to running when possibly it wasn't before.
do you get the title and a window.

no, it only shows the window. no title. i liked it better when the preview showed the titles of all windows at once and with option to close them

apparently when i hide the labels on the taskbar it will show the title on the preview. so i get that. but how do i make it so that it shows a preview of ALL my windows at the same time when i hover over any one of them???????????????
