Windows 7 systray icons too small - look weird

After changing some Windows settings - and then changing them back again - the Windows 7 systray icons (I'm talking about these: Windows 7 systray icons too small - look weird-systray-icons.png) became smaller, slightly cropped and lost details, like when you resize a small image downwards. Unfortunately I have no screen shot of this. It happened on another computer than the the system specs of my profile are associated with:

ASUS G74 laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium x64, with Windows Aero theme with transparency turned on.

    Here's what we did:
(It's hard to guess what everything is called in English (I translated from Swedish), but here's the best I could.)

    1. Right-click the desktop
    2. Click Customize
    3. Click Window color
    4. Click Advanced appearance settings...
    5. Click the dropdown list item below Object:
    6. Choose one of the alternatives listed below
    7. Change either of the Size: boxes as indicated below

In step 6/7 we chose and changed like this:
Active name bar (item 3) - from 11 to 9
    Activity buttons (item 4) - from 26 to 21
    Border thickness (item 13) - from 5 to 4

This was done several times and the computer was restarted in between the times sometimes too.
Then we changed all the settings back to what they were from the beginning.
    Then the described problem occurred.
    How can it be fixed?

All I can think of at the moment is doing an "sfc /scannow" from an elevated command prompt in case one of the core Windows files that controls this behavior somehow became corrupt during the changes. Are you absolutely sure no other activity was done during this time period like downloading/installing other software?

    Hello Walter T

Selecting the default aero theme from the personalization screen and rebooting should put all your sizes back to default.
If not You haven't installed a custom taskbar by any chance have you.

For the record: Yes, I'm sure.
