when i ran startup repair, it took quite a while, but now a new dialogue opens asking if i want to use system restore to restore a prev point and i must answeryes or no as startup repair is still moving its blue bar but drive has stopped working... shall I or shant I restore to an earlier era??

I'm a little confused.
Did you read the link I provided?
That link primarily explains why the 3 times for startup repair.
That link references another link, this one: Startup Repair
which explains the procedure and to then reboot your computer and run startup repair again then to reboot your computer and run startup repair again.
You should not be doing a system restore at this point.
I don't know what you have done.
Please read the tutorials to which I link.
I assume that you read the tutorial and then carry out the tutorial as referenced. These tutorials are even referenced in blogs and kbs from Microsoft. Brink's tutorials are in a class by themselves and are without equal. If you don't understand something in the tutorial then Brink is marvelous at responding and clarifying.

i did read the tutorials in full and as they did not mention i would be given a choice in the "middle" of the startup repair process (during s.reair #1 it asked me this) and that an answer would be mandatory to "finish the startup repair. Do you know what I'm saying?
I am following your instructions explicitly, but without knowing how to answer i though you'd prefer i ask you, I guess I could go ahead and make those type of decisions on my own, but that assumes we are understanding the overall process similarly
again, I did nothing the tutorials/you didn't say word for word here
(the dialog actually had a title bar of "startup repair" and the text said - do you want to do a system restore...? [restore] [cancel] - implying that pressing the [cancel] lbutton might cancel the startup repair, but it didn't I did wait to hear from you so i did not deviate

Then let the system restore to a restore point and when startup repair is finished, reboot and run again. Do that three times.

Uhhh Karl,... "the magic" looks suspiciously like the system recovery options. Yes, that means no change no windows.
I'm going to go ahead and say using the win7 disc repair options Vs. the OEM installed repair options is pretty much exactly the same for all practical purposes.
It did take longer and ask me that extra question during the first run only (like it says in the tutoral you quoted when i asked about the popup, it does say that startup repair will sometimes ask you various questions)
and just like before each time startup repair ran it ends with one of two results (kinda randomly in order) either 1.) Startup repair cannot fix this problem automaically or 2.) No problems were found, in either case the detailed log says 1 root cause a corrupt file "c:\ci.dll" and after 3 different typs of fixes it trys, each fails every time. BUT, like the tutorial said it may say it cant fix it, just to keep going 3 times at most. I did percisely as you/tut's expained, I can follow directions. And I paid careful attention to your every word. I just did the same thing (minus the cd part) like 800 times, same results 800 times!?
That's all I can say as I am out of words just about...
What is going on here in this computer? i just....dunno anymore
