I try to install update. Get "current user" or 'administrator'
Click current user (me) get 'installation requires admin access'.
Click on this - get 'unknown user name or bad password"
???
I've been into the control panel and set my password.
Also tried cancelling my password and going with the blank.
No good either way.

Are you the owner of the PC? If so you should be operating using an Admin-level account set up during install or factory OEM setup, or should know your password.
If it will permit it, in Control Panel>User Accounts try creating a new Administrative-level User account to see if it allows this operation. If so, gradually move your files over until you can delete your old User account, then accept prompt to place its files on your desktop long enough to know you've gotten everything.
If this fails you'll need to come up with the password or back up your files and run full Factory Recovery from boot or disks you've made, or clean reinstall using Win7 DVD: Reinstalling Windows 7. This time set up an administrative-level user account for yourself, limited accounts for non-owners and guests.
Yup -bought it new some time ago. I know how to change admin password, wipe it out etc but these updates it just tells me my password is incorrect.
It all seems straightforward but suddenly it tells me my password is incorrect.
I did see where to try a blank password (wipe it out) but this didn't work eithert
