    Thanks for the info!

Any ideas if the ESC key being pressed during booting would cause a problem?

holding the esc key when its just about to boot into windows stops any programs from starting on start up.

for example my paint mixing machine at work boots straight to the full screen mixing software, holding esc makes it stay at desktop

if its a recovery disk it might not work, but worth a shot.

you can download recovery disks (they used to be free..) that contain all the Microsoft recovery programs. High Speed System Recovery Disc Downloads

someone else my have a better solution, but its a new problem to me
They USED TO BE FREE but no more.

The recovery disk of which you speak - can I build one or do I have one given that I have an operational desktop with Windows 7 Home Edition 86x.

recovery disks, repair disks, boot disks, iso images, back up files, so many methods, so much to learn

I hope this ole man has time enough to grasp all of this.

ok im going to go against everything i stand for and suggest taking out the hdd and virus scanning it on another computer.

People normally always suggest virus's as a last resort.. the thought process goes "hardware failure>drivers>user error>virus>work of the devil" lol
