Two Computers and One Legal XP

All right, I have a five year old computer with a legal copy of XP installed. When I got my new Windows 7 computer last week, I had them partition the hard drive and install my legal copy of XP on it, in case I couldn't run some old programs. My old computer is no longer connected to the internet, and I am using a thumb drive to transfer programs over.

It dawned on me, "What would happen if I took the old computer online?" Would MS know that I have the same XP on two computers?

PS. I have no idea what I am going to do with the old computer, but I think that I should install my legal copy of Windows 98 on it and give it away.

I think, it will work dude but it might be a risky intake... Anyways, my better advice would be to consult Microsoft Technical Support because piracy is a sensitive issue.

Microsoft do run validation checks on your system after you've activated Windows so if you try to run the same copy of Windows on two computers they would in time pick it up.

There's nothing to stop you from removing XP from your old computer and using it on another one providing it is a retail license.

If it is an OEM license the operating system is tied to the computer it was installed on and cannot be transferred.

I'd rather have ubuntu than windows 98 any day.

I would have also virtualized your old copy of XP, rather than use a dual boot method. Also, Ubuntu would be just fine for the old computer, if you needed an OS for it.

SeaVixen, it is my understanding that MS, under pressure, changed that. You can now transfer your legally licensed XP, Vista, or 7 to another computer, but you must delete it from your first one.
