theft - Definition from the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary

as no property is deprived from use by it's owner it's not theft.

    It's copyright infringement.

And a bootloader is not a crack.

    Get your facts straight
Bootloaders are stealing, you are kidding yourself to think its not, the latest case law proves that even downloading copies of copyright material is enough to be sued over. KAZAA anyone?

i've said it once before, i'll say it again:

USA != Center of the world

Downloading in many countries of whatever is legal, distribution however is, illegal.

Case in point: In the netherlands you pay a tax on recording material. This tax goes to an organization which pays it out to copyright holders. Equal parts for everyone.

So in the netherlands the downloading of copyrighted material is legal for personal use.

Anthropocentric thinking is perhaps a general human fault, it doesn't justify it though.

Malheureusement non. I posted in chillout a map of the world as seen by many people from the colonies, it's illuminating.

small error there but not bad :)

donc si tout le monde est aux Etats-Unis
    translates as:

so if everybody is in the usa.

    i guess you meant:

donc oui, tout le monde est aux Etats-Unis

I will pursue, however, "I have a lisence for every MP3 I own". This can only mean that not a single one was ripped from a CD/DVD and that each of them is DRM. I have a number of non-DRM MP3s that I purchased from Amazon.com. They were acquired in good faith, but I have no license for those.

And very few of us "own" any software. You might own the installation media.
i'm sorry to have to contradict some of your (by the way, as always excellent) elaborations on the matter of copyright.

The applicable laws on copyright are different per country.

Making copies of CD's, DVD's, in short all media containing content like movies, music, software or otherwise copyrighted material, in my country (the Netherlands) is a completely legal act, as long as you are in the possession of the original media and/or proof of purchase, and it's limited to personal use only.

Ripping a piece of music from my legally purchased disk to mp3, also falls under that same right.

In fact, in the Netherlands, consumers pay 20% copyright fee for empty media like DVD's and CD's, regardless of the fact one might not use the media to store copyrighted material, but his or hers own content.

(to circumvent this injustice I buy my media in Germany where the 20% does not apply.)(and yes, the Netherlands and Germany are both in the EU)

    Note:
Downloading of copyrighted material is not an illegal act in the Netherlands.
Uploading and sharing it, is! Same as installing or using the material without proper license.
