Windows 7: Windows Search Function returns file in 8.3 format

Windows Search Function returns file in 8.3 format

Bonjour everyone,
I'm having a strange behavior from Windows Search function in file explorer.

When I do a search (in certain directory, not all), I do find two results for the same file, one in extended naming (Here is my file.mp3) along with a second one (M01C~1.mp3).

Anyone knows the reason why I get this behavior and how to fix this?

An other question in regards to this situation, I found a way to completely disable the 8.3 format support in windows registry, is there any reason why I shouldn't?

P.S. I can share the doc I found if anyone wish for.

For anyone who cares, I still don't know why I had some files reported in the old 8.3 format and why, after renaming them I got two results pointing to the same file in the search engine but I did reconfigured the index in the control panel and the 8.3 file quit showing.

I will go ahead and disable 8.3 format support in the registry.

I read about the 8.3 files at and it seems that it is harmless to deactivate it and it even helps to gain a little bit if performance. I am going to give it a try.

The NTFS file system keeps a short name for every file, to maintain compatibility with older operating systems. This setting is not required for a NetBackup master server. By disabling it, you decrease the number of I/O operations per file creation.

Funny how you stumble upon the same problem twice to find out you already posted the solution for it more than a year before ;0) Thank you myself!

Greetings - Running Win7 (6.1, SP1, 64-bit). Previously, I was using WinXP file search in classic mode. Predictable, reliable results. I'm finding Win7 file searching to be unpredictable at best. I have dozens files of the form xName-<date>, where x is my first initial, Name is my...

Search function totally misses some file names
I often search a folder with several layers of subfolders (and then sort by update date) to keep track of versions of things. Just searching a folder and 2-4 layers of subfolders. Just searching by file name, or part of a file name. And Windows 7 routinely MISSES files! This is something that has...
