    Who is 'TrustedInstaller'??

I installed an old SATA hard drive in my computer...it used to be my system main drive, and it still has the old Windows and Program Files folders on it.

I'd like to delete these folders/files to reclaim the space, but when I try, it tells me I need permission from 'TrustedInstaller' to do so.

Colour me baffled. Does anybody know what to do about this? I know there are programs I can run as Administrator, but I have no idea how to issue a command as either Administrator _or_ TrustedInstaller....

    Thanks in advance, etc...

Here is the long answer from Microsoft:

Security: New ACLs Improve Security in Windows Vista

    I hope that helps.

Copy any data you need and format it.

Don't mess with permissions....if you do.....have an image ready. I have needed to use one on more than one occasion.

Sorry -- I left out an important detail. The drive in question is the secondary drive in my system. The working primary drive has the OS install and all my important files on it...what's left on the secondary is junk. The system files I want to delete are my old inoperative W7-RC install.

I suppose I could just format the drive and reinstall the partitions, assuming W7 will allow me to do that....for some crazy reason I thought I could just delete the files and carry on.

OR just format the partitions and you'll be left with the partitions you have and a clean slate. If that works for you, it would work. You can also go into "disk management" and delete or create any configuration of the partitions you would like while you're at it.

Good luck and welcome to the forum.

    trustedinstaller protection crap

this is actually a big deal to me, my windows.old is on my main drive, so reformatting is not an option i want to go through with. i found the answer on another forum that dates back to 2007 and it was so simple... i wouldnt have thought about it because i dont use many of windows 7's built in system tools. just run disk cleanup and it will automatically detect old versions of windows and remove them for you. i just cleaned up 15 gigs on my main drive. and hopefully this will help others

TrustedInstaller is a guy whom I hate most . I paid for everything, but he is the owner of the files ... I am to take his permission to tweak the thing that I have paid for . If I get the dirty mind in whatever part of the world, I will kill him . But he is a fictitious entity .... so I have nothing to do to harm him ..... just I can bring my things back from him ... I am to work hard to earn.

Wanna know how I fought him ? With this weapon (in attachment)

I believe "Trusted installer" is how Windows Update penetrates User Account passwords and controls to quickly update various files which might otherwise be restricted.

It also protects System Files from being edited.

Excellent. Thank you. I now have a vague understanding of what is going on - and why.
