    Hard Drive Icons with autorun.inf

I have a few external hdd's that used to show an icon using autorun.inf. Suddenly it stopped showing up a while ago. I was under the impression it was something to do with MS doing something with autorun but apparently that's not the case as my friend with windows 7 still has his icon.

Any one have any idea's why?

Not really an answer to your issue but have you tried this - Leelu Soft: My Drive Icon 1.0
I used to mess with .inf for my drive icons but found this so much easier.

    Hello mkr10001,

If you used the method like in the tutorial below to completely block autorun.inf files, then that would prevent the icon from being used from it. If you like, you could use step 2 in the tutorial below to restore the default autorun.inf settings to see if the icon returns afterwards when you connect the drive.

    Autorun.inf Files - Completely Block

If not, then the tutorial below will help show you some alternative ways to change the drive's icon to be used by Windows 7 instead.

    Drive Icon - Change

    Hope this helps,

I've recently been using my drive icon but since learning my friend still has his I want to get it back how it was. My drive icon changes it for the letter not the particular drive so if something else gets plugged in and given that letter then it has that icon. That's the downside of that program.

i'll check out that tutorial thanks

Before I do that, can I check....am i opening myself up to autorun malware by doing this?

I'm still trying to figure out how it got disabled in the first place

No, you will not get any autorun malware by going back to the default settings. The default autorun settings for removable drives is to only allow "Icons" and "Labels" to be used from it. Windows 7 will not allow anything to be executed from a autorun.inf file from removable drives. :)
