    BASically, your GPU Ram is completely different to your system RAM. I believe (could be wrong here... but I think this is the way it works) that if the GPU needs more RAM, it will borrow some from the system, but it doesn't "reserve" it in the same way that an integrated chip does. With an integrated chip, it uses the system ram, wheras an addon card has its own ram, and will use the extra in much the same way as an application will. Ie, it will only use it when it has to.
