Windows 7: When wake from sleep, display won't turn on.

When wake from sleep, display won't turn on.

Pretty self-explanatory by the title. I haven't had this problem until two days ago, and I Sleep my computer on a regular basis. This now happens about one out of three times I wake my computer.

The computer turns on, but the display doesn't. It's not the monitor--if I power it off and on, nothing changes, but it will turn on as usual after I forcibly restart my computer. Every time this happens, my only option is to hold down the PC's power button until it shuts off and then power it back on. I've also checked all the cables.

My guess is that it's the graphics card, though it's strange that it started recently--I haven't installed any video driver updates.

The only change I can think of is Windows 7 auto updates that installed recently (none were for the display, all were for "x64-based systems").

My graphics card is an EVGA 9600 GSO with 768MB DDR2.

Hanns•G HH251 connected via DVI (video card end) to HDMI (monitor end) cable.

Another note: This only occurs with sleep. No problems with Hibernate (thus far, at least).

I purposely put it on sleep, so that defeats the purpose. Thanks for the help anyway.

its probably a driver conflict. Try reinstalling your display adapter driver, and/or uninstalling your current display adapter driver and using the default VGA driver instead. Also try unplugging any usb devices. A search on posts titled "sleep" will give you a ton of hits of things others have tried

In another thread it was reported that the monitor identification feed to the PC was disrupted by a recent Windows update. Perhaps that update caused this problem, too?

In addition, check the Performance log to see what might be interfering at the time of sleep, establish a Clean boot and utilize the System resources to check for Problems: Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7

But Sleep issues are almost always the Display driver as noted.

You can trace this using the tool the Pro's use here: Gathering a Startup, Shutdown, Sleep, Hibernate, or Reboot Trace - Windows 7 Forums

Or perhaps the monitor is confused about whether its receiving an analog or digital signal:
