I haven't tried any of that in Windows. In Linux I used links all the time. When running out of room on my installed software partition I'd link to another partition and move everything over. Not fully automated but the path redirection worked. It served the purpose.

Linux is designed from ground up to collect multiple sources under / root file system. In fact it could change the root on the fly. If you had a booting problem you could boot a floppy, change root to the HD to get into your stuff normally, and fix your boot configurations to boot from the HD next time. Just the editors felt unnatural me being from Dos. If they had a lot of text editors with Windows type editing shortcuts I probably would have kept up with it.

Incorrect Start Sector?

I made the mistake of creating excessively large partitions for my 3 operating systems.

When I needed extra space, I decided to resize and relocate my operating system partitions.
I shrunk the partitions and "compacted" them, to get all the empty space combined after them.
When I restarted my PC, only the first OS would run.
The easiest fix I could think of, was reinstalling.

I suspect that the MBR (or the Windows Boot Loader) still pointed at the previous Start Sector locations and of course there weren't any operating systems at those locations.

When I needed extra space, I decided to resize and relocate my operating system partitions.
I haven't moved Windows partitions around since the old days of Partition Magic when I had 4 or 5(if you count Dos as an OS) OS on my machine at the same time. Stuff was simpler then. One thing funny, when I was playing around with VMs I made one from an old Win98 install CD. Then I realized the entire file system wasn't really big enough to do anything with. It's easy to forget how small stuff was then.
