Are These the Symptoms of a Failed Motherboard?

    An HP Pavilion p6310f. AMD Athlon IIX4 630 Quad-Core, 6GB DDR3, NVIDIA GeForce 9100. About 17 months old.

I turn it on and the green light on the power supply turns on, as does the light on the power button. The processor fan and the fan at the back of the chassis immediately start, run for a few seconds and then stop. The HDD makes an initial noise as if it's going to power up then goes quiet when the fans stop. Both power lights remain on. The USB keyboard never lights all. The monitor never even flickers - it just stays dark.

I removed the CMOS battery for an hour. Reinserting it did nothing. I removed all the memory. No beeps on start. I tried a different power supply. Nada. I have triple checked all the connections.

Motherboard looks fine. No bulging or leaking capacitors.

Is it dead? Is it worth fixing?

    boweasel:

Did you remove the power cord from the AC outlet and depress the power button at least twice for at least 20 seconds or more. A hard reset might be needed.

You also might want to post on the HP community forums they have HP experts who are also HP employees that are pretty good at providing answers.

Unplugged & removed all RAM & drive power. No beeps. No change.

    Thanks, but it did nothing.

Worth a shot I guess, although the HP experts are the very people who designed this PC to crash and burn a month after the warranty ran out.

Could you possibly provide me with a link, since I'm unfamiliar with the site? I did post to this forum:
Desktop Hardware - HP Support Forum
but my question's been sitting there for a day with zero replies.

Did you rule out Power Supply yet? If not I'd swap one in to be sure as it's a lot less trouble and expense than a mobo.

Thanks fer the input greg, but that was one of the first things I tried - swapped out the PSU (oops - bad acronym these days) for one that worked on another PC. Same symptom - fans start, HDD sounds like it's gonna start, then nothing. And never any video.

I've never replaced a motherboard. Difficult? Expensive?

Is this your mobo? Motherboard Specifications, M2N78-LA (Violet6) HP Pavilion p6310f Desktop PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

You'll need to weigh the cost for replacement and risk of reinstalling it yourself against having a shop do it, against buying a new prebuilt computer which often costs out to be less or the same.

Typically 100 to 200 dollars, but I don't know a thing about HP mobo prices.

    Difficult?

If you would be replacing with a totally identical motherboard, I'd say it is more a question of replicating what you see with the current motherboard---match each wire and cable on the new mobo to what you see on the existing motherboard. You wouldn't have to completely understand what you were doing.

Take pictures and make written notes of what you see when you open the case on the PC regarding connections from the power supply to the motherboard and from the front panel switches to the motherboard.

Insert memory and hard drives and it should fire on the first attempt, assuming your replication job was good and that it was a motherboard issue to start with.

With due care, taking notes, it might take you 3 hours. A skilled hand could do it in a half hour.

Tools needed: rarely more than a Phillips head screwdriver and maybe a flashlight.

If you fail, post back to this forum or take your pile of parts to a local shop and pretend not to notice their snickering.
