I just rescued an external last night which would show up in Computer but not open or allow rightclick>Properties>Tools to run Disk Check.

What I did was install free Partition Wizard, rightclick on external USB drive, run File System Checker which found many errors until at one point the external's autoplay popped up and it was fixed.

Had that not sufficed, I would also have run a Surface Scan from PW which will see and access the drive for repair sometimes when Windows won't.

    More information needed:

What kind of machine are you using?
What brand, size, model of pen drive?
Do you have the safely remove hardware icon showing in your system tray?
Are there any yellow exclamation symbols on any of your hardware in device manager?
When did this start to happen, have you been reading this pendrive on this machine?
