    Server 2008 is Windows Vista, they both share the same kernel and underlying systems. Even so, 2000, 2003, 2008 were not consumer operating systems. 2000 is a special case while a consumer could have gotten it, it was never marketed towards the average consumer. Until Windows XP, The Windows NT line was targeting businesses.

    3.1 = 1
    95 = 2
    98 = 3
    me = 4
    xp = 5
    vista = 6
    7 = 7

    Even so, Windows 7 would have been Windows NT 7, if they didn't preserve compatibility by setting the version to 6.1
    Vista is NT 6, XP is NT 5.1/5.2. Windows 8 is going to be 6.2.

    Either way, it does line up when you look at it from a technical and consumer angle.

    This is how I see them.
    Windows 1.0 - - - 1
    Windows 2.0 - - - 2
    Windows 2.1*
    Windows 3.0 - - - 3
    Windows 3.1*
    Windows 3.11*
    Windows 3.2 *
    Windows 95 - - - 4
    Windows 98 - - - 5
    Windows 98 SE*
    Windows Me*
    Windows 2000* Not a standard consumer release (imo)
    Windows XP - - - 6
    Windows Vista (odd man out?)
    Windows 7 - - - 7
    Windows 8 - - - 8
    Ive included ME and Windows 2000, with an asterix, as these two were modifications to the previous editions, rather thab a full release. I think Windows 7 should have followed the same trend, as, imho, it was a major update for Vista. (Vista and 2000 see above post) The other asterix marked releases were also all adaptions and improvements on earlier Os's.

    Then by that account, Windows XP should also be as it was just a modification of Windows 2000 for the consumer market. Very little was changed in Windows XP from 2000. It wasn't until Service Pack 2 that really differentiate XP from 2000. Tho from a consumer point of view I can see it.

    Personally I look at it from a 9x NT perspective. 9x being windows 95, 98, and ME. NT being those with an NT kernel. NT4 (NT4), 2000 (NT5), XP (NT5.1), Vista (NT6), 7 (NT6.1). ME I believe was supposed to be the Home (consumer) version of Windows 2000. Vista is I guess Windows 6 and 7 is 7 because they didn't want to call it 6.1 or Vista SE?
