    Windows 10 free upgrade question

I hope this is in the right place.

It seems that Windows 10 is going to be free to upgrade existing Vista and Windows 7 users. That is fine but I have also been told that once I do this (if I decide to), my legal copy of Windows 7 key will be 'killed' and if I wanted to reinstall or restore my Windows 7 - in my case - with Acronis, I couldn't because the key would now be invalid for Windows 7.

Has anyone else any information on this?

I don't think Vista is included in the upgrade program, it's 7 and 8/8.1 only. Read here for more info. Upgrading to Windows 10? Here are the supported paths - Windows 10 Forums

That level of detail about the upcoming "free" upgrade is not yet known. It's all speculation.

Depending on what license you now have and what details emerge, you may be better off bypassing the free upgrade and instead buying a new Win 10 license. No one knows what that will cost.

July 31 or thereabouts is the nearest thing we have to a release date, but no one knows when further details will be provided about the free upgrade.

Vista will not be included in the free offer.

It will be a free upgrade within the first year of its release. Vista is not included, just Windows 7 and Windows 8.

Thanks for the answers and about Vista not being included. I have Windows 7 Professional 64bit and although I don't really plan to actually upgrade to Windows 10 I wouldn't have minded trying it out but when someone told me about that 'key thing' I decided to ask here.

You could always try W10 in a virtual machine to see what it's like. If you're interested (and if your machine meets the requirements) I'll post links to all the info you need. Take a look round Windows 10 Forums there's plenty of info/screenshots/videos on there for you to get the gist of it.

Sorry bout that, never realised my system specs weren't here. That'd be great and thanks for the link. I'll look at that right now.
